Apulia
The heel of the Italian boot is formed by the region of Apulia (Puglia). Apulia is the largest producer of olives in Italy. Much wine is grown in the Salento region, which makes the region one of the most important wine regions in Italy by volume.
Trulli, white round houses with conical roofs, can be found in the province of Bari in the town of Alberobello. These houses are a national monument and are even on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Castel del Monte, known for the image on the Italian 1 euro cent, is located in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. The castle dates from 1240 and, like the trulli, is on the World Heritage List. The tomb of our own Saint Nicholas can be found in the basilica of the regional capital Bari.
Lecce, one of the most important Baroque cities of the world, is also located in Apulia. This region is still largely 'undiscovered' by mass tourism and is also very popular with the Italians themselves.
