The Marches
Marche (Le Marche) is a region in central Italy on the Adriatic Sea. It borders Emilia-Romagna and the Republic of San Marino to the north, Tuscany and Umbria to the west and Abruzzo and Latium to the southeast.
The region is often referred to as 'the new Tuscany' and has undergone significant tourist development in recent years. You will not find the highlights of Tuscany, but you will find the beautiful landscapes, the medieval villages and an impressive coast with snow-white beaches and an azure blue sea. As an extra, you get a decent portion of authentic Italy in De Marken and you are not yet addressed in German or English on every street corner.
The beautiful university town of Urbino with the Palazzo Ducale, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is an important attraction.
The west of the region is occupied by the Apennine mountain range. The highest peak of the region is Monte Vettore (2.476 m) in the province of Ascoli Piceno. This mountain is part of the Monti Sibillini massif, which has been declared a national park. The landscape between the high mountains and the coast is very hilly. This part of De Marken is an important agricultural area. It produces, among other things, much wine, olives and fruit.
The coastline of Le Marche is about 170 kilometers long. The sandy and pebble beaches are interrupted in 2 places by a rugged rocky coast; south of the regional capital Ancona (Monte Conero) where you have beautiful hiking areas and north of Pesaro (Monte San Bartolo).
Especially at Sirolo you have beautiful beaches with a beautiful blue sea. In May or June there is hardly anyone there, but you can have a great time here. Ancona is the only important port of De Marken and the place from where ferries to Greece depart.
