piedmont
Literally translated, Piedmont (Piedmont in Italian) means 'at the foot of the mountain' and that is how this region can actually be seen. It starts at the foot of the Alps, on the border with Switzerland, in the northwest of Italy.
In terms of landscape, the region can be divided into three parts: the Alpine region in the east and north, the Po Valley with the large cities and the hilly landscape in the south-east.
Piedmont borders France and part of the inhabitants also speak French. The Piedmont region is one of the most prosperous regions of Italy. Many large Italian companies have therefore established themselves in this region.
Turin is the only city of size in the entire region, home to about 900.000 people. The rest of Piedmont consists mainly of nature and areas for recreation. The region has many attractions including the Mole Antonelliana and the museum of car manufacturer Fiat.
