For the ultimate Italian food you have to be in Italy - how could it be otherwise? But fortunately there are plenty of opportunities in our cold little country to enjoy Italian delicacies at home. Amsterdam alone is teeming with Italian businesses: restaurants continue to spring up like mushrooms, but you will also find delicatessens, sandwich shops and bakeries.
I live in the capital myself, and I feel like a child in a candy store when it comes to the range of Italian snacks on offer. I list my personal favorites for you.
Table of contents
1. Feduzzi

The owners of Feduzzi, Amsterdam's first delicatessen, describe their store as 'Mercato Italiano'. In my opinion, an appropriate description, because Feduzzi has a wide range of Italian products and fresh meals.
First of all, you can get delicious sandwiches here, to go or to eat on site. I usually enjoy it myself panino pecorino, next to pecorino topped with grilled zucchini and basil. But you can also opt for a sandwich with bresaola or Feduzzi's popular homemade tuna salad.
You choose whether you want a ciabatta, olive foccacia or a brown bun. Still looking for something tasty for dinner? You can also get freshly made pasta, lasagna and desserts here, or ingredients to put something tasty on the table yourself.
Scheldestraat 63
Opening hours:
Monday to Friday from 10:30 - 18:00
Saturday from 10:00 - 17:00
Closed on Sundays
2. Alberto Pozzetto

Alberto Pozzetto is now a household name in the Amsterdam Pijp. Here you can also get delicious sandwiches, which are also incredibly affordable. As we speak you only pay €6,50 per sandwich. But you can also go here for a pasta dish, appetizer or salad.
You can also call on Alberto Pozzetto's cooking skills when you have something to celebrate: they are happy to provide catering for your birthday, work drinks or wedding. You can also reserve a spot on location for a private dinner. Join in and enjoy!
3. Pepperoncino

Peperoncino is mine go-to spot for top products from Calabria, and delicious pizzas. Everything is purchased directly from local Calabrian producers.
The owner also indicates that he himself introduced the pizza with 'nduja in the Netherlands. I therefore recommend taking the pizza menu Monte Poro Super Special to order, topped with fior di latte, spicy salami, 'nduja and smoked cheese.
Around Christmas time, this store is a paradise for car enthusiasts Panettone. There is something for everyone: from classic fillings with raisins and candied fruit to Strega liqueur and pear with chocolate.
And even in the panettone you will find the most famous good from the Calabrian kitchen: when I visited the store last Christmas, I found a variant filled with 'nduja. I didn't really dare to do it myself at the time, but I was secretly curious. I'm definitely looking forward to the holidays!
Maasstraat 54

4. Zero Zero

A tasty sandwich is almost always a good choice, which is why this sandwich shop made the list. At Zero Zero you only get sandwiches (okay, with the exception of coffee and other drinks), and they prepare them the best.
To go into a little more detail, you order sandwiches here smash made from sourdough. This is baked fresh daily to perfection. I prefer to choose the Aubergine, with grilled eggplant, buffalo mozzarella, and red pesto.
Zero Zero has 2 branches in Amsterdam.

5. Salvo

There is also no shortage of Italian sweets in our capital. At Salvo bakery you can order maritozzi, Roman rolls filled with cream. Are you curious about the story behind this sweet sandwich? In this article it is explained in detail.
At Salvo you can buy the classic maritozzo, but the range is also varied with specials such as amarenes, earl gray tea and white chocolate with raspberry.
Please note: the maritozzi are only available during the weekend. Fortunately, you can also buy other delicious baked goods to satisfy your sweet tooth: tiramisù, cannoli and cookies generously filled with pistachio cream, for example. I tasted the latter, highly recommended!
Second Hugo de Grootstraat 9
Opening hours:
Wednesday to Saturday from 09:00 - 16:00
Sunday from 09:30 PM – 16:00 PM
Closed Monday and Tuesday
6. Le Bordel Patisserie

Another hotspot for the sweet tooth! The desserts you can get here are quite traditional - tiramisù, cannoli and babà - but the decor is anything but that. The red curtains and dolls dressed in 20s style are very reminiscent of a brothel. And that is exactly what it is supposed to represent, as you can already deduce from the name.
In the past, tiramisù (meaning: pull me up) was often eaten in brothels. The choice is wider than you might initially think: for example, choose a cannolo with almonds, a tiramisù with pistachio or babà with lemon.
And even if you follow a vegan or gluten-free diet, you can enjoy Italian sweets here.
7. Il Pastificio

Fancy fresh pasta, but less interested in using your own pasta machine? At Il Pastificio, which translates to 'pasta factory', you can buy pasta of all shapes and sizes.
Tagliatelle, gnocchi and rigatoni, for example, but also ravioli filled with various special flavors such as truffle, prosciutto or date.
The offer may differ per day, because all pasta is freshly prepared. Do you prefer a specific product? Then you can also place a personal order.
Eerste Sweelinckstraat 18

Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 - 19:00
Tuesday from 11:00 AM - 19:00 PM

8. Enoteca Sprezzatura

Finally, an Italian meal is often not complete without a nice glass of wine. At Enoteca Sprezzatura, Italian wines are purchased directly from the producer. The focus is on authenticity and organic products.
With the exclusive wines you buy here, it feels like you are in a restaurant!
Not near Amsterdam? Don't worry, you can also order. Fun fact: sprezzatura means something like 'nonchalance'. So enjoy a casual glass of wine!
