In the south-central part of Italy is the region of Abruzzo (Abruzzo). Until 1963, the regions of Abruzzo and Molise belonged together.
There are 3 major national parks in Abruzzo: Gran Sasso-Laga, Maiella and Abruzzo. The two highest peaks of the Apennines, the Gran Sasso (2.912 m) and the Majella (2.793 m), are also located in this region.
The southern region (the name is derived from the Latin Aprutium which meant as much as 'land of the swine') has 4 natural parks: Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga, Parco Nazionale della Majella, Parco Regional Sirente Velino.
In these parks you can see the Apennine ibex, the Apennine wolf and maybe even brown bears.
