Gomorrah the Series – Season 5

Good news for everyone who thought it was such a shame that the least bad villain Ciro had to die at the end of the 3rd season: he's not dead, he's alive.

The 5th and last season of the hard-hitting Italian mafia series Gomorrah highlights the complicated relationship between Ciro Di Marzio and Gennaro Savastano.

The synopsis

The clash between the Levantes and Patrizia left Naples in ruins, forcing Genny to give up his dream of a normal life and return to the solitary life of crime.

At the end of Season 4, we saw Genny, hot on his heels by the police, forced to take a seat in a bunker, without his Azzurra and little Pietro.

Like his father before, Gennaro Savastano has to go into hiding

His only ally is 'O Maestrale, the mysterious crime boss of Ponticelli, an eastern district of Naples.

Another war is imminent, and Genny's enemies smell blood. Then Genny makes a sensational discovery: Ciro Di Marzio is alive, in Latvia.

The old friends reunite in a world full of enemies, but now they are diametrically opposed. A final battle ensues. On life and death.

Inspired by the book by Roberto Saviano

Gomorrah started as the controversial book by investigative journalist Roberto Saviano, which appeared in 2006. Saviano wrote down what no one was allowed to know about the mafia and has been under 24-hour security ever since.

Like the book, the series is set in the notorious Scampia-Secondigliano neighborhood, where crime is rampant, but shares no storylines with the book.

You do get the warnings and insights from the book clearly in the series. It's a cold and desolate life, where everything revolves around power and money and human lives seem worth no more than a pizza Margherita.

The real mafia

Gomorrah show the mafia what she really is. Miles away from the romance out The Godfather or from the films of Martin Scorsese. The main characters are anti-heroes, aren't they likeable, and surrounded by tragedy, drugs and murder.

Roberto Saviano on the series: 'The characters are fictional, but the problem is real. We want to show the world the problem of the mafia, without the heroic or the dramatic elements with which it likes to portray itself. Hopefully countries will join forces to tackle this major problem.'

Saviano previously stated that the mafia is by no means an Italian problem, but that it also operates a lot from the Netherlands, for example.

The Immortal is the bridge

By the way, it is recommended to watch the film before this final The Immortal to watch. In this standalone film from the Gomorrahuniverse, you'll get to know the man behind the criminal better and discover why the Immortal isn't dead.
