Veneto

Veneto (Venetian: Vèneto) is a region in northern Italy. The region borders clockwise: Austria, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Gulf of Venice (Adriatic, Mediterranean), Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Trentino-South Tyrol. The capital of Veneto is Venice.

The region stretches from the Carnic Alps in the north to the River Po in the south. To the west, the Veneto is bordered by Lake Garda and the River Mincio, to the east by the Adriatic Sea and the River Tagliamento.

The region can be roughly divided into three parts:

Mountains
The eastern Dolomites and part of the southern Carnic Alps belong to the Veneto. This area roughly corresponds to the territory of the province of Belluno. Cortina d'Ampezzo is the main winter sports and summer residence here.

Plain
The region's largest cities, including Venice, Verona and Padua, are located in the lowlands. A lot of wine is produced in this important agricultural area. The low plain is interrupted south of Padua and Vicenza by the small hill groups of the Monti Berici and the Colli Euganei.

Coast
Most of the coast is taken up by the lagoons and the delta of the River Po. The regional capital Venice is built on a number of islands in the largest lagoon: the Laguna Veneta. The northernmost part of the coast is rich in sandy beaches – here are the much-visited seaside resorts of Jesolo, Bibione and Caorle.
