This Is Italy
Monique van Delft is Dutch and comes from Vlaardingen. Since childhood, she and her family went on holiday in Italy every year. She fell in love with the island of Elba with its rich nature and culture. And to an Italian. At 22 she got married and went to live on Elba.
In love with Elba
She continued her education in Italy. After the pedagogical academy for primary education, the university in Pisa followed.
Since 1992, after the state exam, Monique is a teacher of Italian, history, art, geography and English. She is active in the European Comenius Project that brings together students and teachers from all European countries for the exchange of culture, didactics and methodology.
She also took courses for teaching a language to foreigners.
Monique has a son and a daughter, both already married, and she is the happy grandmother of a grandson.
Today she teaches Italian to Dutch people on the island of Elba. She can tell you everything about the island, the Italian language and about the Italian culture. She shared the photos below of this beautiful island off the coast of Tuscany with us. Are you ready to go? We do!
The island of Elba
The island of Elba is part of the Tuscan archipelago, it is a National Natural Park. A green oasis in the middle of an azure sea, one hour by boat from the Tuscan coast. What makes the island so beautiful is its erratic, hilly shape with numerous bays and beaches. The highest mountain is 1.000 meters high, the Monte Capanne. From there you have a breathtaking view over the island and the sea.
There are gravel beaches, sandy beaches and fascinating rock formations surrounded by green forests. You can go pedal boating, canoeing, diving, windsurfing and sailing on almost every beach. And of course lie on a lounger in the sun or take a dip in the deep blue, clear sea.
The history of the island goes back to well before the year zero. There are also many picturesque small villages. Rich in history, with small streets and squares where you can sit on terraces, shop or stroll along the boulevard. Of course you can also enjoy a delicious meal in one of the many restaurants that have the culinary specialties of Tuscany on the menu.
A visit to the museum and the house of Napoleon is of course not to be missed. In the evening it is cozy everywhere. In every village there are night markets and the shops are open until midnight. Live music is often also played in the village squares.
