Last Wednesday, at the age of 57, one of Italy's most famous singers died of cancer. Gianmaria Testa was a typical singer-songwriter who sang while talking in the style of Paolo Conte. He played the guitar himself.
His breakthrough came at a later age (in 1999) with the album lightning. He also achieved fame in Portugal, Canada and France. He has also been to the Netherlands for a concert in the Melkweg in Amsterdam and played at the North Sea Jazz Festival. Of course he also played at the Umbria Jazz Festival, which is so famous in his own country.
In 2006 he released the album Da questa parte del mare which was entirely devoted to the refugee problem. He made a plea for a more humane treatment of refugees. Gianmaria Testa has also performed in the theater in Italy, to bring the same theme to light in a different way.
His music, and that of other Italian musicians, can also be found on my Spotify Playlist.
