This spring, while looking for the most beautiful Italian villages, we came across Bevagna. This village, with approximately 4.800 inhabitants, is located just southeast of Lake Trasimeno and Perugia and is truly of stunning beauty.

Bevagna rightly belongs to the 'borghi più belli d'Italia', the most beautiful villages in Italy, and in 2008 was even voted the 'Borgo dei Borghi', the most beautiful village in Italy.

sleepy village

During our visit to this medieval village in the Umbria region, the weather was beautiful and warm. We settled on the site at Piazza Silvestri, one of the many beautiful piazzas in Bevagna. Gradually it became busier and busier on the square. Even the local police got involved.

Two buses with school children stopped. Children got out, changed into cars and other children got back on the bus. As suddenly as the bustle began, calm returned. After a delicious pizza for lunch and an Italian ice cream, we went into the sleepy village to explore.

walled

Bevagna is a walled town with 5 towers. The city walls, with a length of approximately 2 kilometers, date from the 3rd century BC and are still largely intact. You can admire the old wash house and breathe in the medieval atmosphere that still prevails here.

The path on the outside of the wall, with a length of about 3 kilometers, is also worth walking. And of course you should sit on a terrace here and have a nice drink or – better yet – a pranzo (lunch) or a cena (dinner).

Sights in Bevagna

In addition to the city walls, there are several other sights in Bevagna, including:

  • The Museo Civico di Bevagna: This museum houses a collection of archaeological finds, paintings and sculptures from the history of Bevagna.
  • The Chiesa di San Silvestro: This church was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to Saint Silvester, the patron saint of Bevagna.
  • The Tempio di San Francesco: This temple was built in the 13th century and is dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi.
  • The Teatro Torti: This theater was built in the 18th century and is still in use for performances.

Bevagna is definitely one of the most beautiful villages in Umbria and also ranks high on the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
