September 19 marks 25 years since ice mummy Ötzi was found in the Italian mountains of South Tyrol, or South Tyrol. The finding of the mummy was unique, as at 5.300 years old, it is the oldest human mummy ever found in Europe.
Both the body and the objects that Ötzi was carrying have remained intact. South Tyrol celebrates its 25th anniversary with, among other things, a special like, with the famous mountaineers Tamara Lunger and Lino Zani as guides, along the site of Ötzi.
Ötzi is an ice mummy about 5.300 years old. His discovery on the Ötztaler Glacier in 1991 on the border of Italy and Austria was a remarkable discovery. Because of the ice, the body has remained almost intact. Once it became clear how special Ötzi was, important discoveries were made that provided insight into European prehistory. A time about which little was known. To this day, Ötzi is the oldest human mummy ever found in Europe.
Celebrate the birthday of the ice mummy
To celebrate Ötzi's 25th birthday, you can join the hike on August 30 with Tamara Lunger and Lino Zani, two well-known mountaineers from South Tyrol. They take interested visitors through the beautiful Alps and along the site of the ice mummy. The tour is organized by the ArcheoParc museum and can also be done every Tuesday (other days on request) with a regular guide. From mid-June to mid-October the tour is on foot and from December to May on skis.
The popularity of Ötzi
Ötzi's body is on display at the Archaeological Museum in Bolzano in South Tyrol. An entire floor in the museum has been set up for the ice mummy and the objects found with him. Here you can also see a truthful reconstruction, made by the Arnhem brothers Adrie and Alfons Kennis.
Ötzi may be an ice mummy, but he is hugely popular. Since his arrival, the museum has attracted 300.000 visitors a year. Hollywood actor Brad Pitt even has a tattoo of the ice mummy on his forearm.
