2. Sulla mia pelle

This is the true story of 31-year-old ex-drug addict Stefano Cucchi who died in prison in 2009 as a result of police brutality. The film is an indictment of the bureaucratic Italian culture that allows an innocent person to be mistreated to death.
3. Call me by your name

This Italian-American film alternates between English, French and Italian. It's a beautiful story about growing up and burgeoning sexual feelings. The director, Luca Guadagnino, made the film in 2009 Io sono l'amore, which received critical acclaim. A review of Call me by your name you read here.
4. LORO

The magisterial Toni Servillo shines again in this biopic by Paolo Sorrentino about the turbulent life of Silvio Berlusconi, the cat with the 9 lives.
5. MyWay

Admittedly, this is not an Italian film. But very interesting for people who want to better understand the person and the period Berlusconi. And not of the fictionalized story as in LORO want to go out.
Alan Friedman is a well-known American journalist who speaks Italian and even put on a show on the Italian television has hosted. He wrote an authorized biography of Berlusconi under the title My Way and now there's this one fascinating documentssilence, which paints a sobering picture of the politician who changed Italy forever.
6. Caffe sospeso

It is a tradition in the coffee bars of Naples. A customer who can suffer orders not one, but two coffees. One he drinks, the other is for a less fortunate customer. This person can ask if there is another coffee 'on hold'. In this documentary, several people discuss the tradition of 'delayed coffee' and how it has changed their lives.
7. Rimetti a noi i nostri debeti

Rimetti a noi i nostri debiti (Forgive Us Our Debts) is an Italian drama from 2018. The story is about a man who struggles under the crushing weight of debt and starts working as a bailiff to pay off his creditors. This movie was released on May 4, 2018 by Netflix.
8. The Two Popes

Not really an Italian film (actually not at all, although a little bit of Italian is spoken in it), but one that does it Vatican bring into your living room. And that is why it deserves a place on this list. The film is based on the abdication of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis in 2013. The lead roles are played masterfully by the veterans Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins.
9. Benvenuto Presidente!

Something lighter? Benvenuto President is a 2013 Italian comedy directed by Riccardo Milani and starring Claudio Bisio. An nobody is accidentally elected President of the Italian Republic. For the lovers of Italian humor!
10. 18 Regalia

If you look at the synopsis of 18 Gifts look, you can't help but conclude that this must be an emotional drama.
Elisa is pregnant and goes to the hospital because of a bleeding. She is told that the baby is all right… but not herself. Due to an incurable tumor, she will never see her daughter grow up. Elisa makes sure that baby Anna gets a gift for each of her until her 18th birthday. But when Anna wants to escape from the presents when she is 18, she is hit by a car… A drama like this can easily derail, but director Francesco Amato knows how to keep it small and fairly light-hearted.
11. L'ultimo paradise

L'ultimo paradise is a new Italian movies on Netflix. The film makes you dream away to the Puglia of the 50s. The story is about a farmer who wants to improve the situation of other farm workers. But during his struggle, he falls in love with a landowner's daughter. He finds himself caught between his dream for a better life and his love for Bianca.
Incidentally, this is a film that you can best miss. He gets a measly 5,4 on IMDb. But the beautiful pictures of the Pugliese landscape make up for a lot for the Italy lover.
