What is the largest emerging market of all? The answer is not geographical but demographic: it is the woman! The Harvard Business Review described this development several years ago and today this is also widely confirmed within the tourism sector. Recently, Forbes magazine concluded that women make about 80% of all travel-related decisions and bookings. The type of trip that they are increasingly booking in recent years is a solo trip, so the average adventurous traveler is not a 28-year-old man, but a 47-year-old woman.

Travel search engine HomeToGo researched the driving force behind the travel industry and found that women are not only making travel decisions, but are also increasingly traveling alone. The search engine found out the best and most popular destinations for solo female travelers in 2018.

Various international studies such as the 'Global Peace Index' and the 'Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report' were used for this, and experienced solo travelers were interviewed. In this way, HomeToGo selected travel destinations for different types of female solo travelers. All these countries were then assessed on the basis of various criteria, the main ones being: Safety, Hospitality, Activities, Travel & Transport, Cost of Living and Accommodation.

Italy – the perfect start as a solo traveler

Whether or not inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert's memorial Eat, Pray, Love many travelers choose Italy as their (first) solo travel destination. The food, the delicious wine, the innate hospitality of the Italians, combined with the beautiful weather and history everywhere, make a trip within the 'boot of Europe' unforgettable.

As a solo traveler you are absolutely safe here and there is plenty to see and experience to never be bored again for a day. It is said that the Italian travel experience was so special for many women that they decided never to leave Italy.

Despite the fact that (public) transport, and daily life itself, is sometimes a bit more chaotic than at home, traveling around Italy is easy. The local cost of living do not avoid the Dutch prices much, but are usually absolutely cheaper.

Italy is a holiday destination par excellence and there are therefore a huge number of holiday homes, hotels and apartments. The price of an overnight stay is relatively easy, but Italy is not the cheapest travel destination.

So. What are you waiting for? It's time to have fun backpacking through Sicily, for example!
