This Is Italy
The southern Italian city of Matera in Basilicata was voted European Capital of Culture for 2019 last month. Matera is famous for its historic center, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also known for its nickname: la citta sotteranea, or the 'underground city'.
The Sassi
The city has an entire district carved out of the limestone rock, dating back to prehistoric times. This neighborhood is known as the Sassi di Matera. In the Sassi you will also find many churches in caves, sometimes only a few square meters in size. In the center of this old quarter, at the highest point, is the cathedral from the year 1230.
In the 50s, many people from the old quarter were moved to modern homes in the new part of the city. It goes without saying that many were not expecting this, but the government persevered. Living conditions in the old town were abominable, as many houses are little more than caves. After that, the old center was sealed off and completely restored.
Movie Inspiration
It goes without saying that this magical historic center has inspired many artists, writers and filmmakers. The most famous movie that was shot here is probably The Passion of the ChristMel Gibson's Jesus Movie. But the list of movies whose scenes were shot in Matera is certainly not limited to this one. "I am confident that Matera will attract more visitors from Europe and around the world to discover its history and cultural diversity," said European Commissioner for Culture Androulla Vassiliou of Matera's appointment. 'I am convinced that the title will bring Matera and its environment long-term cultural, economic and social benefits, just as we have seen with previous European Capitals of Culture.'
