Why VPN is useful on holiday in Italy

It is the time of year when many people are preparing for a winter sports holiday in Italy or are already busy with their summer holidays in Italy. In the preparations for your holiday you should also take a look at VPN. VPN on vacation can be recommended for several reasons.

What is VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It is a way to establish a secure connection over a network over the Internet. Basically, your computer connects via a server in another country, so that the connection cannot be traced back to your location.

By using an app on your tablet or smartphone or downloading a program on your desktop or laptop and logging in with your VPN account, you can surf anonymously, bypass geographical blocks and make secure use of public WiFi networks.

Why do you need a VPN on vacation?

It is interesting for various reasons to use a VPN in Italy and before you leave. Here are the main reasons.

1. Book airline tickets anonymously

It all starts with booking your airline tickets. The ticket sales sites track your IP address and therefore know when you are interested in Italy holidays. The longer you search for interesting offers, the higher the prices. Checkout!

You can prevent this with a VPN. Your computer identifies itself as a visitor from Germany, France or the United States rather than as an interested person from the Netherlands or Belgium. The sites do not know that you have been looking for tickets for some time and that time is running out.

2. Safely use public Wi-Fi in Italy

In Italy you have access to public Wi-Fi in many cities, campsites and hotels. Handy, because this way you prevent your data subscription from running out in no time.

But using public Wi-Fi isn't always safe. Public Wi-Fi is simply very easy to hack, which means that malicious agents can look at your screen. Not such a problem if you check the latest news, but you should definitely be careful if you want to use internet banking or check your credit card balance.

You avoid problems by setting up a secure connection via a VPN. That may seem difficult, but it's just as easy as opening your app, as long as you have a free or paid VPN account.

3. Keep following Dutch or Flemish series while on holiday

Do you want to continue to follow the series from home via, for example, Netflix or Broadcast Missed? Then you can just discover on vacation that you can't watch your favorite program. This has to do with the rights to programs that are often only released for the Netherlands or Belgium.

With a VPN you can make your smartphone, tablet or laptop pretend that you are just at home, while in real life you are on the Tuscan coast with a cold Aperol Spritz. This way you can easily bypass any geographical blockages.

4. Watch Rai Uno and the Italian Netflix

It also works the other way around: if you are in the Netherlands or Belgium, you sometimes want to watch those Italian Netflix series that you don't have at home. Whether you want to enjoy the illustrious Italian television which is blocked for foreigners by default.

With a VPN account it is a piece of cake to choose an Italian server. Once connected, you can watch Italian television and log into your Netflix account to view the Italian offerings.

Please note: you do need a valid Netflix subscription to watch Italian Netflix.

Is it legal?

Yes, using VPN is perfectly legal. Only a few dictatorial regimes have banned this. These are often the countries that block certain social media and websites for their residents (such as North Korea or China).

If you come to such a country, you can still use Gmail or Facebook with a VPN. In the western world you have the right to surf anonymously and hardly any websites are blocked here (an exception is the illegal download site The Pirate Bay, which is blocked in the Netherlands).

Fortunately, there is no such thing as a mandatory identification with your real IP address here.

What is the best VPN?

You get the best quality VPN services with a paid VPN provider, but there are also plenty of opportunities to try VPN for free for your holiday.

According to own tests and customer experiences on VPNgids.nl, ProtonVPN is the best provider of free VPN.

The free version of ProtonVPN gives you access to servers in 3 different countries. You can only use the VPN on one device at a time and if many people are using it at the same time, the service can become slower.

But it is still a good way to test whether VPN is of added value for you, for example during your next holiday in Italy.
