The Etruscan capital of the 'green heart of Italy' gets enough interest from tourists. But the north of the region of Umbria has much more to offer in the area.
Tourists know where to find Perugia. The city is older than Rome and guarantees a relaxed lifestyle and less crowds than the capital of Italy. Perugia did not suffer from the earthquakes that took place in the south of the region last year.
Perugia is known for its remains from the Etruscan times, for the fortress that forms the entrance to the old city and for the famous 'Baci', Perugina's chocolates.
Outside the walls of Perugia, however, you will find many more highlights, five of which we will explain in this article.
1. Castiglione del Lago
Castiglione del Lago is a village on the western bank of the Lake Trasimeno, the third largest lake in Italy. On the spot where Hannibal defeated the Romans with his elephants two thousand years ago, things are much more relaxed today. From this beautiful place you can take the boat to the Isola Maggiore.

2. Assisi
The home city of St. Francis is one of the most visited places of pilgrimage for Catholics from all over the world. A major earthquake in 1997 damaged the basilica, but the restoration was fortunately well done.
From Assisi you have a beautiful view over the green hills of the region. In Assisi you can also see many craftsmen working on their terracotta projects.
3. Montone
This walled medieval town is well worth the drive from Perugia. A classic example of an Umbrian hill town. Look out over the green valleys, the olive groves and the Umbrian countryside.

4. Gubbio
Located against a hill, Gubbio was an important trading center in the Middle Ages. Now it is a wonderfully atmospheric place with the most beautiful streets and alleys.
During the Christmas period you will find here the largest Christmas tree in the world to (although IJsselstein thinks otherwise), which has been built slightly against Monte Ingino.
5. Citta di Castello
Hidden in the high valley of the river Tiber is Città di Castello. The village is the birthplace of the influential Italian sculptor Burri and hosts many cultural and culinary festivals.
Take the slow ride from Perugia Sant' Anna or Perugia Ponte San Giovanni through the not very flat Umbrian countryside to the village and you'll see much more beauty along the way.
