Have you ever considered traveling to one of Italy's major islands in the preseason? Sicily and Sardinia are perfect for a spring holiday in the form of a fly drive.
Why go to the islands in the spring? There are 3 main reasons for this:

- In the period van mid-March to the beginning of May the weather is often fine in Italy, especially on the southern islands of Sicily and Sardinia. But not too hot to do anything yet. You can therefore also book a fly-drive in the May holiday from the end of April to actively view the sights, go hiking or cycling.
- In the spring it is mass tourism has not yet started. Yet there is plenty to see and do throughout the islands in the form of festivals, markets and of course the special archaeological and cultural attractions.
- De rates for both flights and rental cars are significantly lower in the preseason. In Italy it is still low season during the May holidays, with corresponding prices for catering and accommodations.
But apart from these 3 main reasons, there is much to be said for traveling to a Mediterranean island if spring has yet to get underway here. Nature is then at its most beautiful and the islanders are starting a new tourist season fresh.

Especially Sicily has something to offer for everyone, but Sardinia is also beautiful for island lovers. Are you a lover of beach and sea? Then you will certainly enjoy yourself in Sicily and Sardinia, although you will hardly see the islanders themselves venture on the beach in spring.
What to do in Sicily?
what you do during your fly drive to Sicily exactly depends on your own preferences. Everything is possible here, from gastronomy to boat trips and from visits to volcanoes such as Etna to cultural excursions.

If you have 2 weeks, we recommend a roadtrip across the island. 14 days is just enough to get the highlights of Sicily to watch. Because make no mistake: the island is the size of Belgium and there are hardly any highways.
Really worth it for example: the Etna, Temple Valley of Agrigento, Trapani, Erice, Noto, Aeolian Islands, Catania, Ragusa, Syracuse, Cefalù en Palermo.

Do you have about 1 week or less time? Then don't risk a complete round trip, because then you're just sitting in the car. It is better to limit yourself to Eastern Sicily with Etna, Catania and Taormina or just Western Sicily with Trapani, Erice, Palermo and the Aegadian Islands.
Things to do in Sardinia
Sardinia is truly an island for coastal lovers. Almost every piece of the 1.840 kilometers of Sardinian coastline is beautiful to see. From golden sandy beaches to jagged rock formations.
Book one fly drive to Sardinia if you want to enjoy some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Italy. In addition, the kitchen is a must for lovers of fish and shellfish.

Are you a lover of culture and ancient civilizations? Then you will indulge in the nuraghi, stone structures built thousands of years ago. The nuragic complex Su Nuraxi in Barumini is a real must see. Here you will find the most beautiful remains of this ancient civilization.
Don't forget the giant Gigantic di Monte Prama not, large statues unearthed several years ago. This important discovery prompted several theories about early civilizations on the island to be reconsidered.
The tourist hotspot of the island is the Costa Smeralda. A coastal area of about 55 kilometers long with the most beautiful beaches and coves. And the most expensive accommodations of i ricchi ei famosi. Make sure you have sufficient credit on your card. This coast is one of the most expensive in all of Italy.
Also visit the capital Cagliari. For a long time this was just a transit port to the nicer places on the island, but that has really changed in recent years.
The center is now car-free and due to the unrest on the North African mainland, cruise ships have moved their port of call to the south of Sardinia. As a result, the capital is alive and well and much has been invested to make it more attractive.

Car is a must
Both in Sicily and Sardinia it is a must to rental car to have with you. This gives you the most freedom of movement to get everywhere. The distances on both islands are greater than you think and the possibilities of public transport are not great.
With a rental car, which you can already book in the Netherlands or Belgium with your flight to Sicily or Sardinia, you will get the most out of your stay on the island.
You can book the flight and the rental car separately, but you can also always look for a cheap fly-drive. The sooner you join, the more you can save. You can also bet on a last minute.
