In recent weeks there has been an investigation about Italy on this site. You may have seen it pass by and possibly even participated in it. 1.059 visitors to this website completed the questionnaire. Now it's time to announce the results.
Good food and culture
It turns out that Dutch and Flemish people like to go to Italy for good food (26,3%), closely followed by the culture in Italy (25,9%). Less mentioned were sun and sea (20%) and nature (18,7%).
Tuscany favourite
Tuscany is by far the favorite region. No less than 27,7% of the respondents cite Tuscany as 'the most beautiful region in Italy'. Sicily follows with 9,6% of the vote. Umbria finished third, which is the most beautiful region for 8,1% of the Dutch and Flemish.
As reasons for Tuscany as the most beautiful region people cite the following reasons:
- 'Rich culture, nature and cuisine.'
- 'Cities, nature, colours, food and drink, tranquility.'
- 'Tuscany is romantic, nice and warm, has beautiful churches and cathedrals, museums, everything for a wonderful summer holiday!'
It is also clear that Apulia (Puglia) is an emerging region among respondents. With 5,6% of the votes, this region scores 5th in the heel of the boot, well above other regions such as Lombardy, The Marches of Liguria.
Become the least often Basilicata (1,1%), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (0,9%) and Molise (0,7%) mentioned. Still some work to do for the promotion offices of these regions!
During the summer
Most people indicate that they travel to Italy in the summer (44,9%), followed by the spring (39,4%). Very few respondents go to Italy in the autumn (13,8%) and in the winter (2%).
The reasons for traveling in the spring are:
- 'The weather and the burgeoning nature.'
- "Not so hot and crowded yet."
- "Because of the lovely weather."
The following are the reasons for traveling in the summer:
- 'Tied to the summer holidays.'
- 'Sun and sea.'
- 'Nice and warm.'
Reasons to travel in the fall or winter are:
- "I go all year round."
- "Not as hot as in the summer."
- "Then it's quieter."
- 'To ski.'
Longer than 2 weeks
35,9% of the respondents go to Italy for a trip longer than 2 weeks. 29,6% opts for a period between 7 and 14 days and 21,4% opts for exactly 2 weeks. Only a small minority of 13,2% go to Italy for a few days to a week.
Hotel is popular
Of the respondents, 26,2% opt for a hotel. The camping is popular with 23%, while 21,5% opt for a holiday home. Other frequently mentioned accommodation options are a B&B, your own house, with friends or family or on a farmhouse.
Loyal Italy goers
Most respondents are loyal Italy goers. 38% go to Italy every year. 33,8% even go to Italy twice or more. 2% do not go to Italy every year.
People also mentioned the following things about Italy:
- 'A beautiful country with history and culture.'
- 'Friendly, helpful and patient people.'
- 'Great atmosphere.'
- 'We prefer Puglia during the summer, but love the whole country.'
- 'Beautiful country, delicious food, you're still really a guest here.'
