Sardinia round trip: great nature, picturesque towns and fine beaches

There is much to see and experience in Northern Sardinia

round trip Sardinia

Sardinia has long been a popular holiday destination for Italians, but more and more people from outside Italy are also coming to explore this island in the summer. Logical, because it is a beautiful island that has something to offer for every holidaymaker. You have great nature with rugged mountains for experienced hikers, picturesque towns with cozy shops and restaurants and of course fine beaches where you can relax. Time to explore the island, time for a tour of the north of Sardinia.

Rent a car

Last summer I spent ten days in the north of Sardinia. By plane we landed in Olbia, the third city of the island. At the airport of Olbia we rented a car. This is immediately a good tip for a trip in Sardinia: rent a car if you come by plane. Of course you can also come to the island with your own car by boat, but if you don't want to travel too long, renting a car is really a solution. There are a lot of providers, so there is always a nice car waiting for you, but if you read carefully in advance about all conditions and insurance, you will not be faced with surprises.

Looking for beautiful beaches

A car is a must, especially if you want to visit several places in Sardinia. The island is not really equipped for public transport. You can also get to the most beautiful places by car! So don't be afraid to drive on a piece of unpaved road, because there is a very good chance that you will end up at a beautiful and quiet beach.

La Maddalena

From Olbia we drove to The Magdalene. This is a small island above Sardinia where you will be taken by ferry. By car you can drive all the way around La Maddalena and visit all the beautiful beaches. Also stop at one of the chioschi where in the afternoon, if it gets too hot on the beach, you can have a nice lunch in the shade of the tall trees. It is recommended to stay at La Maddalena for a few days. Do not stay too short, because there is a lot of beautiful nature to see.

Alghero

Our next destination was Alghero, the second largest city in Sardinia after Cagliari. Alghero is a beautiful town with a bustling city center and a fairly large harbour. It is pleasant, but there is still plenty to see and experience (and eat, of course). From Alghero you can easily drive to beaches, nature parks and higher viewpoints. You can also visit caves near Alghero, but only if the sea is not too wild, otherwise the excursion cannot go on. The island Asinara is also easily accessible from Alghero. In addition, divers can indulge themselves in this area and do various diving excursions.

Olbia

After Alghero we went back to Olbia, where we stayed another night before catching the plane to the Netherlands again. Olbia is also very easily accessible, especially in the high season, several airlines fly to this city.

We spent the night in the bed and breakfast of the Dutch Belinda. She has been living in Sardinia for years and has started her own B&B.

Costa Smeralda

The region in which Olbia is located, especially the Costa Smeralda, is very popular with bathers. Here you will also find the jet set of Italy: rich people spend their holidays here on beautiful coastal towns such as Porto Cervo. In this area you will also find many discotheques. But if you don't like crowds, there are plenty of white beaches with an azure blue sea and huge rock walls in the background.

Your Sardinia tour?

So, that was my tour of Sardinia, at least the north of it. I have become very curious about the rest of this island and would like to come back again to visit the south!

Have you ever been to Sardinia? Did you also make a tour? I'd love to hear your tips and experiences!

For years I have been completely in love with Italy. Sunny holidays, an educational school trip to Rome and Florence and an Italian uncle ensured that I came into contact with this beautiful country at a young age. My love for language made me sign up for an Italian language course in 2009, after which I chose to study Italian language and culture. During this bachelor I did an internship in Naples for more than four months, where I got a taste of real Italian life. After my bachelor I did the master in Translation, which mainly focused on translating from Italian into Dutch. Now I am taking my first steps in the world of translation.
