This Is Italy
More than 53% of visitors to This is Italy will go on holiday to Italy this year, 31% have already booked, 23% have yet to do so. Tuscany is still a favorite destination. For example, it appears from an online survey that Italy magazine Dit is Italy conducted this month and that was completed by 853 respondents from the Netherlands and Flanders.
When asked 'Are you going to Italy this summer?' 31% replied that they have already booked. 23% are planning to, but have not yet booked. Just under 20% answer that they will not go to Italy this summer and almost 27% don't know yet.
By car
When asked 'How are you traveling to Italy this summer?' more than 66% gave the response 'with their own car'. The aircraft is in second place with more than 18% of the votes. With 4% of the vote, the bus took third place among the means of transport. One respondent mentioned the bicycle.
May holidays
In the survey we also asked about the May holidays. Visitors to This is Italy indicated with more than 37% that they would go to Italy during the May holidays. Almost 37% indicated that they would not go on a May holiday this year. A minority of 8% went on holiday in May, but not to Italy. 18% said they would never go on a May holiday.
In April it was in the news that many Dutch people would like a longer May holiday. Naturally, we also asked about this. 14% are interested in the option of a longer May holiday in combination with a shorter summer holiday. 13% would also like a longer May holiday, but not at the expense of the summer holiday, while almost 12% would like a longer summer holiday and do not consider the May holiday important.
The vast majority of 61% indicate that they do not find it important or do not depend on holidays.
Tuscany continues to be popular
At This is Italy, we also took the opportunity to ask about the exact destination of those who indicated that they were going to Italy. 314 respondents answered this question. Tuscany is as popular as ever. What is striking is the large increase in popularity of the southern region of Apulia (Puglia).

- Apulia: Mentioned 21 times
- Umbria: Mentioned 20 times
- Piedmont: Mentioned 17 times

- Veneto: Mentioned 15 times
- Lombardy: Mentioned 11 times
- Lake Como: Mentioned 10 times
- Liguria: mentioned 9 times
- Rome: Mentioned 9 times
- Sardinia: mentioned 8 times
- Abruzzo: mentioned 8 times
- Dolomites: Mentioned 7 times
- Calabria: Mentioned 7 times
- Emilia-Romagna: Mentioned 6 times
- Trentino: Mentioned 6 times
- Amalfi: Mentioned 4 times
The results agree with earlier research of This is Italy, which was carried out pre-corona. Even then, Italy-goers turned out to be home-bound, with a preference for Tuscany, good food and culture. 38% said they would go to Italy every year.
Hotel and campsite
During the previous survey from 5 years ago, we also asked about accommodation preferences. 26,2% of the respondents then opted for a hotel, while the campsites in Italy were popular at 23%. 21,5% opt for a holiday home. Other frequently mentioned accommodation options are a B&B, your own house, with friends or family or at a farmhouse. By way of comparison: according to figures from the ANWB, about 40% of Francophiles opt for camping at one of the many campsites in France.
After the holiday period, This is Italy will repeat the investigation in more detail to check whether the plans made have also been fulfilled.
